Trump and May

By Peter Marshall

Donald Trump is truly absurd. He is not only a racist and misogynist and believes in torture but an extreme right -winger who denies the existence of climate change. It seems that the American people, particularly the poor, the unemployed and the dispossessed, have now voted for a TV ‘reality’ showman and developer of private property. He is a billionaire, with money gained in the worst possible way, and unable to express himself in a coherent sentence. He is profoundly anti-Islamic. Yet he claims to be able to make America ‘great’. If that is greatness, I feel extremely sorry for the American people and for those around the world who will be affected by his policies.

At the same time, the Prime Minister of Britain, Theresa May, is the first foreign ‘dignitary’ to meet him. She holds his hand, invites him for a state visit and hardly raises a criticism. She then flies to see the president of Turkey and sells arms to the country, despite the increasing authoritarian, Islamic and undemocratic turn he and his government are taking.

With Trump and May hand in hand, supported by the majority of their voting populations, totting nuclear weapons, betting all on economic growth, what hope is there for this English-speaking world?
