Girls Will Be Boys Will Be Girls Will Be… Coloring Book Shout out on Drag Queen Story Hour

Drag Queen Story Hour
December 9th, 2019

People always ask Drag Queen Story Hour for book recommendations, so we thought we’d share just some of our favorites with you… just in time for your holiday shopping!  These recommendations are direct from our libraries to yours, including our queens, librarians, and community members.  And some books are so popular, multiple people wanted to share their praise!

We’ll be posting our recommendations all week—and we also want to hear from you!  What are your favorite books, whether for story hour or bed time?  We’d love short reviews from drag queens, librarians, parents, and especially from kids!  Please send your short reviews to Lil Miss Hot Mess with a photo of yourself we can post on our website.

As always, we encourage you to shop at your local bookstore whenever possible, though if you are going to buy online, you can support DQSH through Drag Queen Story Hour on Amazon Smile.

Harmonica Sunbeam

Harmonica Sunbeam says:

I fell in love with this book from the first time I read it. At some point in life I believe most people have felt as if they didn’t fit in somewhere. When that happens , you can stay and be miserable or go somewhere where you are loved , respected and appreciated. We all deserve a chance to live a happy life.

Ramona Mirage

Ramona Mirage says:

Neither teaches about accepting others, as well as forgiving those who’ve hurt us.

Panda Dulce says:

I love Neither because it’s a smart, colorful spin on binaries, not fitting into any particular boxes in general, and how we can construct a world that welcomes everyone. It’s especially great for gender expansive and queer and trans spectrum folks, and anyone who feel their differences might preclude them from membership in normative identities/communities.

Sometimes when you’re done reading, you just want to color your own pictures!  This excellent coloring book offers inspiration to kids of all ages to defy gender stereotypes, express themselves, and celebrate the diversity in their communities.  Plus, the author Jacinta Bunnell has a bunch of other coloring books too: The Big Gay Alphabet Coloring Book, Girls Are Not Chicks Coloring Book, Sometimes The Spoon Runs Away With Another Spoon Coloring Book, and a Spanish-language Las Niñas Pueden Ser Reyes Libro Para Colorear.  Sharpen those crayons!
