This is Wisconsin’s Wolf River— Front Lines: A Lifetime of Drawing Resistance Excerpt

By The Internationalist

Susan (Sue) Simensky Bietila (born 1947) is a Milwaukee-based artist whose protest art includes art and illustration for underground newspapers (including RAT and The Guardian) as well as giant street puppets. She has also worked in puppet-making, constructing giant puppets for demonstrations related to Latin American Solidarity. As an illustrator and designer, Bietila continues to be involved with the collective that publishes WW3 Illustrated.

Issue 174 of The Internationalist excerpts from Bietila’s book, Drawing Resistance. In this excerpt, she illustrates how the campaign against the Crandon Mine was won by an unlikely alliance that brought together Indigenous communities, environmentalists, activists of all ages, and feminist organizations.
