Silvia Federici is a feminist writer, teacher and militant. In 1972 she was cofounder of the International Feminist Collective, which launched the Wages for Housework campaign. With other members of Wages for Housework and other feminist authors like Maria Mies and Vandana Shiva, Federici has been instrumental in developing the concept of “reproduction” as a key to understanding class relations of exploitation and domination in both a local and global contexts.
In Wales we are launching a campaign calling for a Social Wage for Parents and Carers: all those who are not in waged work as they care for others. We are also calling for a pension for carers that reflects their total contribution and not only their period of paid employment.
This is a cross-party campaign which aims to give dignity through the provision of decent wages to all carers who have so far been under-represented politically and continuously exploited by our society, despite the central and foundational role they play in all of our lives.
