Black Metal has always been queer and anti-authoritarian

We are the pit

Welcome back to The Pit’s Favorite Riffs, where we share new metal songs that have recently come out and that we love! Here are the metal songs we highlighted from last week!

As always, our goal with this feature is to shine a light on more underground metal bands. This week though, we are doing something a little extra special! Released as of today over on Bandcamp is the Black Metal Rainbows compilation.

You may have heard us talk about the book Black Metal Rainbows in the past, but to provide you some insight (per a description associated with the book): “Black Metal Rainbows is a radical new vision of black metal – a book like no other: a unique collection of stunning artworks and thought-provoking writings by a wide range of 80+ writers, artists, activists and visionaries.”

This book looks to be a remarkable work that not only covers the LGBTQA+ artists who are working within the genre, but also the efforts being made to create a more inclusive space within black metal – a space of love where all are welcomed. So with the book coming out soon, the folks behind Black Metal Rainbows have decided to release a massive black metal compilation featuring… 130 SONGS! Such acts featured on this compilation are: Ancst, Pupil Slicer, Ragana, Gonemage, and many, many more.

Per the Black Metal Rainbow‘s Bandcamp page:

“The Black Metal Rainbows Compilation Album is a show of strength: 100+ underground and black metal, noise, and electronic artists coming together in support of LGBTQ youth. From blackened grind to epic black metal, blackgaze to dungeon synth, noise to avantgarde, this massive compilation of queer, trans, leftist, anarchist and antifascist bands from the global underground will raise money for charities helping LGBTQ youth: The Trevor Project, Mermaids, Minus 18, and The International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex (LGBTQI) Youth & Student Organisation.”

You can purchase this massive metal compilation as of today (follow this link here). You can also listen to the compilation via the Bandcamp audio player provided below. We have already listened to this compilation and love it! There’s so much amazing music here and the proceeds with each record purchase go to great causes. We are also very much looking forward to when the book arrives as well!
