Editor and essayist Burlison has an admirable portfolio of writing and activism for and about women, and has amassed an impressive list of contributors from all different walks of life and experience for this collection. From award-winning writers like Melissa Chadburn, Leilani Clark, Ariel Gore, and Laurie Penny, to contributors like an undocumented student, and a queer, cis sex worker, this book represents women both well-known and not. Composed of interviews and personal essays, Burlison’s book has something for every woman to identify with and feel empowered by. In “Fear, Safety, and the Realities of an Undocumented Student in a Border State,” Burlison interviews a university student about her experience being undocumented in America. “Auntie Starhawk’s Sex Advice for Troubled Times” shares advice for having a shameless, positive, consensual sex life. In “Coming out as Trans in a Small Hometown,” artist Ariel Erskine talks to Burlison about her life as a trans woman. This is an excellent choice for readers seeking a nuanced view of women’s struggles today, and an interesting option for book groups.
