The first anarchists I ever met were right-wing anarchists. My mistake was spending too much time in the science fiction section of the bookstore, and in the comic book shop, I suppose, when I should have been at some hardcore show in another kid’s garage. We all wish to smash the state, of course, but some people think that there is moral equivalence between publicly owned toll-free sidewalks and the Stalinist Gulag. And they’re beginning to make significant headway in American political culture.
I blame science fiction, specifically the work of Robert A. Heinlein, in my essay in The Smart Set.
