On June 2, during a research trip in the North Calotte, I had the honor to visit Niillas Somby, author of In the Hour of the Wolf, and his wife and the book’s translator, Margarita Emelianova, in Tana Bru/Deanušaldi, where they live. I have known Niillas for seven years, since I interviewed him for the book Liberating Sápmi: indigenous Resistance in Europe’s Far North. He is a wonderful man, and I’m very proud to have had a helping hand in bringing out his autobiography in English.
Niillas remains a keen observer of politics in Sápmi and beyond. His principals are lifelong. Niillas fights the forces of coloni’alism and the abuse of power wherever it occurs. I strongly recommend his book to anyone!
